Maria Palen's niece Helen (Palen) Wood filed a petition to probate Maria's estate on Sept. 11, 1895. She identified the other heirs as Catherine Palen of Michigan; Maria J. Ballard of Campbell, Cal.; G. E. Palen, E. K. Palen, J. R. Palen of Philadelphia; Mrs. E. Palen of Germanton, Pa.; and "various others in Philadelphia." The estate was worth approximately $13,000 including a house and lot on McCoy Ave. and Orchard St. in San Jose, a lot in Pacific Grove, lots in Menlo Park and some personal property. (San Jose Herald, Sept. 11, 1895). A holographic will dated Apr. 12, 1895, was filed in the probate court on Sept. 27, 1896.
