Howard Hammond Irish, Jr., Class of 1940, a first Lieutenant in the 91st Coast Artillary, was killed Sept. 7, 1944, in the sinking of a Japanese prison ship in the Sulu Sea. He had been held captive by the Japanese since the fall of Corregidor in May 1942. He graduated from Liberal Arts on June 10, 1940, having entered from Coopersville.
