From North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865, Volume 4, Infantry. "John D. Beaver. Color Corporal. Born in Cabarrus County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Cabarrus County at age 18 , April 6, 1861, for the war. Mustered in as a private. Captured at Roanoke Island on February 8, 1862. Paroled at Elizabeth City on February 21, 1862, Exchanged in August 1862. Promoted to Color Corporal on June 17, 1864. Present and accounted for until reported wounded and captured on the Weldon Railroad, near Petersburg, VA, August 19, 1864; however, records of the Federal Provost Marshall do not substantiate that report. No further records."

According to the "Roster of Company H. 8th NC Regiment"; " Killed at Petersburg VA, August 19th, 1864".
