She was born in Lewistown, Montana to Dr. Harry E. and Hazel Allard Pierce. She graduated from Fergus County High in Lewistown in 1944. She attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.

She married Carol M. Kenney on June 29, 1956 in Raton, New Mexico. .

Also surviving are three daughters, Debra (Chris) Barton, Diane (Brian) Hoff and Donna (Tom) Baird and seven grandchildren.
