Claud Cross
Mr. Claud Oliver Cross, 90, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Gladys Love Cross who died Nov. 20, 2001.

Born Nov. 2, 1911, near Vilonia, Ark., he was a son of the late John Taylor and Mary Catherine Diehl Cross.

Mr. Cross' family moved to a farm in Choctaw Indian Country of southwestern Oklahoma while he was of preschool age. He attended school through seventh grade, when he missed two years to help his family by working as a mule skinner in the Oklahoma oil fields.

He returned to high school where he graduated with honors. He was on the basketball team, wrestling team and sang tenor in the chorus. After graduation, he enrolled in Central State Teachers College, Edmund, Okla., and later at the University of Oklahoma.

In 1941, Mr. Cross and his bride of three years moved to Washington, where he became a newspaper distributor for The Washington Post until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He was trained in field artillery, and served combat duty in Europe as part of the 97th Division, most of the time being attached to the 3rd Army under Gen. Patton.

After his discharge from the Army in 1946, he was re-employed by The Washington Post where he worked for 12 years. He worked one year in construction doing wall tiling before entering the University of Maryland, from where he graduated in 1962 with a bachelor of science degree.

During this time he also coached boys basketball and baseball as a volunteer with the Rockville Recreation Department. He and his wife worked at a Girl Scout camp in Maine for several summers.

Mr. Cross was a teacher at Libertytown Elementary School until his retirement in 1976. Literature and science were his favorite subjects. He was a member of the Frederick County Retired Teachers Association.

He was an avid fisherman, fishing along the Potomac River, Chesapeake Bay and along the shores of Maryland, North Carolina and Florida. He also loved to discuss current events and politics. He continued to be an avid sports fan throughout his life. His favorite times were those spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are one son, Larry Cross and wife Jeanne of Middletown; one daughter, Jane Windmiller and husband Don of Corvallis, Ore.; seven grandchildren, Tammy Comsock of Brunswick, Timothy Cross and wife Stephany of Cedar Valley, Utah, Lauri Wilhelm and husband Matt of Mount Airy, Jennifer Cross of Frederick, Michael Cross and wife Janet of Spanish Fork, Utah, and Julianna Cross and Matthew Cross, both of Middletown; and seven great-grandchildren, Heather Princette Nelson, Susanah Renae, Melanie Elizabeth Wilhelm, Megan Danielle Wilhelm, Eliza Jane Cross, Amanda Rachel Cross and Lenna Eileen Cross.

Mr. Cross was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, Catherine Cross, Lillian Caldwell, Ella Andrews, Ursie Myers, Clyde Cross, Marvin Cross and Raphen Cross.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where friends may also call all day Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints, 199 North Place, Frederick, with Bishop Leon T. Hewerdine officiating.

Interment will be in Parklawn Cemetery, Rockville.
