CODY'S OBITUARY
U.S. Veteran

On Wednesday, May 27th Cody Holte, loving husband and father tragically died in service to his community at the age of 29 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Cody was born on March 17, 1991 in Fargo, ND to Bret and Tracy (Redland) Holte. During Cody’s junior year of high school he attended the Connecticut State Police Youth Week where he discovered his passion for leading, serving and protecting. He graduated from Norman County West High School in 2010. After high school Cody attended basic training in Fort Jackson South Carolina and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he became a Military Engineer in the North Dakota National Guard. He attended Minnesota State University Moorhead and received a degree in Criminal Justice with minors in Sociology and Military Science in 2015. Cody was an active member of the Army ROTC for three years during college and then commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Cody was currently serving in the North Dakota Army National Guard as a First Lieutenant. His units were out of Jamestown, the 817th Combat Engineers, and presently Lisbon with the 815th Construction Engineers. Cody was also a part of the ND rappel team. He began his career with the Grand Forks Police department in 2017. Additionally, he was a member of the Water Rescue team.

Cody wore around his neck a medallion on which the verse Phillipians 4:13 was engraved…”I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength”. We are grateful God gave Cody the strength and courage to serve and protect, leading him to give the ultimate sacrifice; his life, in the line of duty.

Cody put God, family and country above all other things. On August 27, 2016, Cody married the love of his life, Amanda Christian. Together they loved to travel, spend time with family and friends, and the simple pleasure of one another’s company. They were blessed with the birth of Gunnar July of 2019. Cody loved being a dad…snuggling and kissing Gunnar’s cheeks were two of his favorite things to do. They were already running together before Gunnar could even walk, but Cody could hardly wait to pass on to Gunnar the things his dad had taught him.

Cody lived each day by the saying, “Don’t let yesterday use up today”. Always the first to offer a helping hand, his kind heart and outgoing personality left an imprint on all he touched. His smile preceded him. Cracking a joke with his quick wit were part of his daily life. He loved sports as both a player and a spectator; go Duke Blue Devils! He annually hunted in Western North Dakota with Grandpa Pete, his dad, brother and friends, a special event he never missed. He cherished family time at the lake including Gunnar’s first boat ride. With the Holte’s, every event was a family one; there was no I or me, it was always “us”. That value carried with Cody as he entered his life as a husband and father.

Cody is survived by his wife Amanda, son Gunnar, parents Bret and Tracy (Redland) Holte, sister Alexis Schmidt, twin brother Brady (Dani) Holte, nephews Ames and Henry, grandparents Nathan and Kerry Redland, great grandmother Ardyce Holte, father and mother-in-law Tim and Sandy Christian, brother-in-law Matt Christian, grandmothers Shirley Christian and Carole Eide, many aunts, uncles and cousins, all of his brothers and sisters in blue, ROTC, and United States Army.

Cody was preceded in death by his Grandparents Peter & Susan Holte, Roy Christian and Allen Eide.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, North Dakota at 1:00 p.m. visitation prior from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

A large crowd is expected. If you plan on attending, please make good decisions to protect yourself. Practice social distancing, (families of the same household are allowed to sit together.) Wearing a face mask is recommended.

On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, 1430hrs(local), two Grand Forks Sheriff's Office Deputies went to an apartment at 2627 South 17th Street to serve a Writ of Restitution as ordered by a Judge (eviction-related paperwork). The Writ of Restitution ordered Deputies to remove a male and a female resident and all possessions as of three days prior.

Uniformed deputies knocked on the apartment door and received no answer. The Deputies then gained access to the apartment and observed the male retreat to a bedroom.

Deputies gave several commands for him to come out of the bedroom. As he refused, the Deputies then eventually deputies opened the bedroom door.

Upon doing so, they were met with a barrage of heavy gunfire.

Corporal Ron Nord, a 34 year Law Enforcement veteran, was shot in the upper leg and abdomen. He has been the Civil process Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office for 9 years. He is in stable condition. Our healing prayers are with him and his family.

Sergeant Kelly McLean, a 28 year veteran to the GFSO and former assistant team leader of the Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team, was not injured.

The Deputies immediately retreated from the room and radioed for back-up.

Grand Forks Police Department officers arriving on scene were Corporal Patrick Torok, a 27+ year veteran of the GFPD, and a 25+ year veteran of the Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team, along with Officer Cody Holte, a 3 year and 3 month veteran of the GFPD, and a member of the Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office Regional Water Rescue Team.

Corporal Torok and Officer Holte immediately entered into the apartment, coming to the aid of the deputies under fire.

Gunfire was exchanged in multiple volleys between the suspect and the officers on scene. Through the exchanges, the suspect, age 41, received several gunfire wounds. Aid was rendered on scene, and he was transported to Altru for his injuries.

Lola Moore, age 61, was killed by gunfire during the course of the incident. Our prayers are with her family.

Officer Cody Holte suffered multiple gunfire wounds during the incident. Emergency medical aid was rendered by officers who then carried Officer Holte to the ambulance for transport to Altru Hospital.

Sadly, Grand Forks Police Officer Cody Holte succumbed to gunshot wounds and was pronounced at the hospital.

Grand Forks Police Chief Mark Nelson stated: "There’s a hole in my heart that can never be plugged. These people wear a badge, these people protect your community, these people ask for nothing in return other than an honest salary.

Remember, it is not how this officer died, it is how this officer lived that made him a true hero.”

Cody was also a First Lieutenant in the North Dakota National Guard.

Brother Cody leaves behind his beloved wife, infant son, and families. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the families, both of blood and of Blue - from all of us at True Blue Warriors

Holte’s family issued a statement calling him “an incredible husband, father, son, brother, uncle, police officer and soldier.” Prosecutors have charged Salamah Pendleton with two counts of murder in the deaths of Holte and Lola Moore.
We will update charges once official.

When uniform and civilian guests have been repositioned, Holte will be led out of the arena. There will be a “flyover” conducted during this time.

The procession will commence from Ralph Engelstad Arena Drive.

The procession is anticipated to begin between 3 and 3:30 p.m., though that time frame may change, the department said.

The route is as follows:

The procession is anticipated to be lengthy, and significant traffic delays are anticipated, the department said.

The department asks for people to plan Grand Forks local travels accordingly between 3 and 4:30 p.m. Drivers should anticipate an inability to cross the identified roadways for extended periods of time.

Per officials of the Ralph Engelstad Arena and UND, no public demonstration requests have been received or approved for Tuesday, June 2, the police department said.

“As such, public notice is hereby provided that public demonstrations will not be permitted on REA or UND property on that date,” a news release said. “Anyone wishing to engage in a public demonstration is hereby directed to city sidewalks at the corner of 10th and Columbia Avenue.”
