VERA JOYCE [FONVILLE] GALLAGHER entered this world born in Oxley, Canada on June 26, 1924 and passed away quietly in the comfort of her home with her family on November 18, 2018 at the age of 94.
Vera was preceded in death by her father Brice Fredrick Fonville, her mother Vera Pearl Harris Fonville of Oxley, Canada; her two brothers Elden Ralph Price Fonville and Veale Julian birch Fonville. Her husband of 70 years James D. Gallagher passed away on December 29, 2015 at the age of 93.
Vera Gallagher was survived by her daughter Roberta Joyce Gallagher and her son Douglas Lee Gallagher. Vera was a long time resident of Los Alamos, coming here in the Army in 1944 as physical therapy nurse. She married James D. Gallagher on August 16, 1945 and enjoyed his company for 70 years.
Vera lived a very fulfilling life raising her two children. She was active in the community starting with being a Girl Scout leader in the early 1960's. From then she pursued a carrier as a floral designer starting at Johnny Pullums nursery on DP Road. When Lou and Lee Perroti opened up their floral shop she went to work for them and stayed with them until they decided to retire, she retired with them. Always a baker, Vera started her own cake decorating service for quite a few years making specialty cakes, birthday cakes and wedding cakes. During this time she got into her favorite hobby which was china painting to which she excelled in. She pursued china painting full time and gave numerous pieces to everyone around her she thought would enjoy a china piece. Vera was also an avid knitter. She learned to knit at age 16 and knitted socks for the soldiers while growing up. Knitting allowed her to knit over 500+ slippers over the years. She would put special buttons on each pair and with a toy to accompany them, wrapped them up and gave them to the Ronald McDonald house so a child coming there could pick out a pair to have.
Vera was also involved with the Senior Citizens Center a service there for the past 26 years. It was through the Senior Center that she donated the slippers for Ronald McDonald house. Being an avid baker, she along with others at the Center baked cookies, breads, etc. which they would go the farmer's market and sell to make money for the Center to get furniture for outside. She was a greater at the Center collecting money for meals. Vera joined the quilting group at the Center being the knitting portion of the group. She knitted sweaters, scarves, hats, and gloves to give to people she met there that she thought would enjoy. Through her china painting hobby, Vera painted numerous soup bowls to be given away at the Seniors Soup program. Also, she would paint all sorts of china pieces and give them to people at the Center she thought they would like. Decorated quite a few Christmas trees for the Seniors Tree Festival to raise money.
Vera will be very deeply missed by her family and friends.
