Obituary for Mr. Herman Deckard
Herman Deckard passed from this life, Monday, June 1, 2020 at ninety-six years of age. Herman retired from Cummins Engine Company in 1980. He served as a well-respected foreman of the Columbus COP plant. Many of his former employees have shared stories of what a kind man and great boss he was, and how he touched their lives. A quiet, kindly, hardworking and industrious man, he also enjoyed farming and continued to farm after his retirement. An avid gardener, Herman enjoyed working outside in his garden, small apple orchard and on his lawn. As a devout Christian, he was a long-time member of the 25th Street Church of Christ. He and his wife Wilma attended services there faithfully. His faith and diligence on studying God’s word were next to none. The very definition of a kind and gentle grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren and knew just how to make them laugh with his well-timed sense of humor.
Herman was born December 19, 1923 in Belmont Indiana, located on Salt Creek bordering the Brown and Monroe County lines. He married Wilma Jean Woods, the daughter of James and Nellie Pearl Bond Woods, on September 4, 1943. They were blessed with nearly 71 years of marriage, but she preceded him in death on August 30, 2014 just days before their 71st anniversary. They had four children. Three sons survive, John (Darlene) Deckard of Columbus, Mike (Cynthia) Deckard of Hope, and Brian (Robin) Deckard of Hope. They had one daughter, Nancy Sage, who passed from this life on August 31, 2019.
Herman is survived by eight grandchildren Michelle Perkinson of Columbus, Indiana, Candace (Brian) Doll of Columbus, Indiana, Evan (Anne) Deckard of Napierville, Illinois, Jessica (Benjamin) Brown and Laural (Michael) French, both of Hope, Indiana, Greg (Lindsay) Sage of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Samantha (Matthew) Krueger and Levi (Allison) Deckard, both of Columbus Indiana. He is survived by several great-grandchildren Isabella, Carter and Cohen Sage; Ella and Alex Doll; Katelyn and Chase Deckard; Wyatt and Luke French; Gibson, Bowen, and Easton Deckard, Jordan and Jocelyn Krueger, as well as a step great-grandson Zachary (Lindsey) Brown. He is also survived by three step great-great grandchildren Macimae, Madisyn and Jaxon Brown of Taylorsville, Indiana. One grandson, Matthew Deckard, preceded him in death.
His parents, Lonie and Elsie Mae (Floyd) Deckard of Belmont, preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by brothers Leslie (Earlina) Deckard, of Nashville, Louie (Joy) Deckard of Olgiville and Cecil (Mary) Deckard of Portage. He is survived by three sisters, Lucille (Kenneth) Stevens, of Bloomington, Maxine Braswell, of Juliett, Georgia, and Peggy Armstong, of Morrow, Ohio. He also has two surviving brother Joseph (Darlene) Deckard of Columbus and Lonnie (Darlene) Deckard, Jr. of Nashville.
The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Brace Rutledge officiating.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday and 9:00 a.m. to time of service Saturday.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
