Wm. J. Hiler (sometimes spelled Hyler) was the oldest of eleven children. He was the child of John Thomas Hiler and Martha (Vaughan) Hiler.
He married Lydia Elvira Lewis Oct 21, 1851 in Pittsylvania Co., VA (presumably in the Brosville area).
He served in the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company D, CSA.
He was captured towards the end of Civil War and held prisoner by Union troops in the former Confederate Libby Prison in Richmond. The war ended on April 9, 1865, but he was not released until June, 1865 suggests that he may?? have been either wounded or sickly and unable to be released.

Sallie Willie, birth date unknown; John James Hiler, born Oct. 22, 1859; George Martin Hiler (later spelled Hyler), born Oct. 15, 1864; William Witcher Hiler, Sept 15, 1867; and Chesley W. Hiler, born Aug. 19, 1869.
