Melvin (Dude) Austin, 74, of Broken Bow, passed away September 25, 2006, at Broken Bow Nursing Home. He was born September 8, 1932, in Wickes, AR, the son of James and Lena (Blanton) Austin.

He joined the U.S. Navy in June 1951. He was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Dude was stationed in San Diego, CA; Newport, RI; Key West, FL; Guam, Hawaii, and Japan serving on eight ships. Over his twenty year career he received numerous ribbons and medals. He retired with honor on December 31, 1970.

Dude was united in marriage to Nora Potts on December 24, 1977 in Broken Bow. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends and family. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion of Wickes, AR.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lena Austin; his sister, Willie Krantz; and his brothers, Henry, Homer, Elbert, Othel, and Olen Austin.

Dude leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Nora Austin, Broken Bow; one son, Hank Austin and wife Becky, Broken Bow; one step-son, Danny Camp and wife Vickie, Sulphur Springs, TX; one step-daughter, Twila Minter and husband Tom, Swaziland, Africa; grandchildren, Jonathan Minter, Amber Minter, Aaron Camp, Zachary Camp, and Evan Austin; in-laws, P.A. and Pearl Potts; sisters-in-law, Myrna Caplinger, Willa Dean Austin, Jeanette Austin, Joyce Meddock and husband Frank, and Geneva Moydell; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
