Norman was one of six children born to John and Harriet (Jones) Arlin. He seems to have grown up in Northern Maine, but by 1910, had married Jesse Sanborn and was living in Somersworth, working as a baggage handler for the railroad. They had one son, Norman Jr. At the time of his death, he was operating a billiards hall on Hanson Street in Rochester. He died from septic cellulitus.
