Samuel Ashby Carter, 78, of 132 North Commerce Ave., city, died at 10:10 a.m. Sunday at the Waynesboro Community Hospital.
Born on Oct. 23, 1876, in Nelson County, Mr. Carter was a son of the late William and Sallie Elizabeth Cook Carter. Before his retirement, Mr. Carter was a foreman for the State Highway Department where he was employed for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucy Jane Henderson Carter; three daughters, Mrs. Chester Davis, Lyndhurst; Mrs. Phillip Yarbar, Waynesboro, and Mrs. Julian Ramsey, Greenfield; one son, John W. Carter, Chicago; two brothers, John L. Carter, Johnson City, Tenn., and Thomas B. Carter, Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Berta Taylor, Waynesboro and Miss Ollie Carter, Covington; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The body will remain at the Etter Funeral Home and will be placed in the Hebron Baptist Church one hour prior to the service. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., being conducted by the Rev. J. H. Weaver, assisted by the Rev. G. E. Keeney and the Rev. H. E. Truitt. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Lloyd Carter, Robert Carter, Ralph Carter, Newton Henderson, John Cook and Frank Cook.
Honorary bearers will be Raymond S. Higgs, Raymond J. Higgs, John Garrett, D. B. Garrett, Jack Bowers, Cecil Harding, Forest Duncan, F. H. Tucker, G. M. Terry and Cletus Robertson.
The funeral procession will leave the late residence at 1:30 Tuesday.
