Missionary to China. Daughter of Rev. Jeremiah and Eliza (Chappell) Porter.

Mary went to China in 1868 as a member of the North China Mission under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. She was the first missionary sponsored by the Woman's Board of Missions of the Interior (WBMI). From 1867-1882 she was in charge of the Bridgman School for girls in Peking and then moved with her brother (Henry Dwight Porter) and his wife to Pang Chuang, China where she taught. From 1886-1893 she returned to the US to care for her parents primarily in Beloit, Wisconsin. In 1893 she returned to China and was responsible for a girl's boarding school. During the Boxer Rebellion she returned to Peking where she was associated with the Bridgman School and then from 1906 -1911 she was principal of the Angell Memorial Bible Training School. In 1911 she retired to California.
