Funeral services for Mrs. Lavinia Bishop Baird, 70, wife of the late Dr.R.W. Baird, prominent Dallas physician, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Highland Park Methodist Church, She died in a Dallas hospital Wednesday after a 2-month illness.
Mrs. Baird was born in Corsicana, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Horace Bishop. Her father, a Methodist minister, was the first President of Southern Methodist University's Board of Trustees.
Mrs. Baird was graduated from Georgetown University at Georgetown, Texas. She was married to Dr. Baird in 1900 in Waxahachie. they moved to Dallas, where he was practicing.
Dr. Baird organized the Dallas Medical and Surgical Clinic.
Dr. and Mrs. Baird were instrumental in organizing Grace Methodist Church. They lived in the fifth house built in Highland Park at 38002 Maplewood. In their living room, plans were made to organize Highland Park Methodist Church.
Through the last war, Mrs. Baird worked three days each week for the American Red Cross. She received a citation from the organization. Since the war and until her illness she taught knitting at the Little Mexico Village.
She organized a Bible class for young women at her home and was a former member of the Matheon Club. She also was a charter member of the Dallas Woman's Club.
In 1937, Dr. and Mrs. Baird went to Australia to attend a Rotary World Convention. Members of the family say she received an honorary citizenship there and it was one of her prized remembrances.
Mrs. Baird lived at 4408 Glenwick Lane.
Dr. Umphrey Lee and Dr. Marshall T. Steel will officiate at the funeral services. Entombment will be at Hillcrest Mausoleum.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Speight Jenkins and Mrs. W. E. Campbell Jr., both of Dallas; two sons, Dr. R. W. Baird Jr.of Houston and Horace B. Baird of Stockton, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. L. G. Tong of Dallas, and seven grandchildren.
