Joseph Stewart Charles, age 87, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, October 31, 1982, at General Hospital.

A native of Union County, SC, son of the late John David Charles (1868–1944) and Elva Gault Charles (1871–1951); husband of the late Pearle Wood Charles (1895–1975).

An engraver for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal before his retirement; was a member of Harvest Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sons, James Stuart Charles (1920–2017) and Oliver Manning Charles (1915-2004); daughter, Carol Deane Charles Furr (1918–1994); sisters, Ruby Charles Tennille (1904–1993) and Minnie Lee Charles Calvert (1907–1986)t; brother, John David Charles (1909–1983); seven grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Also predeceased by his siblings, L. Marvin Charles (1890–1923), Mae Charles Wood (1891–1979), Vera Charles Golson (1893–1966), Wallace Little Charles (1897–1950), Guy Heiness Charles (1898–1970), Pearle Charles Anderson (1902–1971), Ernest Earl Charles (1902–1961), and William Donald Charles (1911–1973).

Funeral services held at 1:30 pm, Monday, November 1, 1982, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel by Dr. John Hysson and Rev. Ray Lanford; burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials made to Harvest Baptist Church or to Cleveland Park Bible Church.
