Charlotte Hay Coombs was the daughter of James Parker Coombs and Mary Ella Thompson. She was born at Wakpala, a farm in Freeport, Maine which has since been established as an Audubon Society bird sanctuary.

Charlotte dropped out of school at the age of 16, but at the age of 48, she obtained her GED and then entered the University of Maine as a special student. She did well during her first year and in 1964 graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English. It was her proudest moment.
At her request, her body was cremated and her ashes were scattered on Frenchman's Bay off Bar Harbor and on Casco Bay off Portland, Maine.
