Candido Arango, son of Candido Arango y Garcia and Manuela Estrada y Suarez, was born in Salamir, in the concejo of Cudillero, Asturias, Spain.

At the age of nine he went to Havana, Cuba where he lived with his family until 6 June 1918. In that year he immigrated to the United States where he obtained his citizenship in 1925.

Arango, as he was called by his family and friends, was a Merchant Mariner. He traveled all over the world, especially through the Mediterranean Sea and the east coast of South America.

Dad was very proud of his native Spain and often told stories of the years he spent there when he was a child, and later of his visits as an adult.

He died of cancer in Hawthorne, New York. His ashes were scattered in the ocean outside Cudillero Harbor.
