Mary Myers Alford, was born in a house on Calhoun Street in Tallahassee, FL on August 6, 1919. She was the third child, and only daughter of J. Rutledge and Jenny Myers Alford. She has two older brothers, Julian R. Alford and Charles H. Alford and a younger brother James (Jamie) M. Alford, all of who preceded her in death.
She was raised in Tallahassee and graduated from Leon High School and then attended and graduated from The Florida State College for Women (FSCW), currently The Florida State University (FSU). White at FSWC she was a proud and active member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and has since received a lifetime membership award from KD.
Following the graduation from FSWC, she taught school in Apalachicola, Florida and while there met the love of her life and life partner, David C. Nusbickel, who was participating in the training of the US Army troops for amphibious landings (preceding the Normandy invasion) during WWII. They were married in Tallahassee in 1943 and shortly thereafter David was deployed to the European theater of WWII as an artillery officer. They were reunited on Christmas day following the end of hostilities.
David and Mary settled in Winter Park in 1947 and eventually built a house at 1020 N. Park Avenue where they started a family, first with the birth of David C. Nusbickel Jr. (Chip) and Frederick R. Nusbickel (Freddy). In 1952 they completed a new house at 512 Fletcher Place in Winter Park, where in 1953, they welcomed their third son, Stanley A. Nusbickel (Stan). David predeceased Mary in February 1981 and Mary remained in the house until 1991 when she purchased a condominium unit at the Cloisters Condominiums in downtown Winter Park. She remained at the Cloisters until 2009 when she moved to the Winter Park Towers) and remained there until her passing.
Mary Nusbickel was truly an example of a Southern Lady, she was gracious and friendly to all, she was set in her ways, she loved the game of bridge and would join a bridge game at the drop of a hat. She had numerous close friends over the years, most of whom have preceded her in death. She was a loving and supportive wife and mother and when grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived, she became a fun loving, hugging nurturing Memaw. She was a founding member of the Winter Park Presbyterian Church and in lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Winter Park Presbyterian Church, 400 S. Lakemont Ave, Winter Park, FL 32792.
