William Daniel Sweeney was born on September 16, 1889, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Frank Joseph Sweeney and Emma Francis Toomey, and the brother of John Aloysius, Anna, Lawrence, Frances D., Elizabeth (Sister M. Ernestine, IHM), Frank Joseph, Mary E., Emily, Joseph and Alice Emma. According to the US Census of 1910, he was employed as a laborer in the coal mines.
He married Helen Decker, and they were the parents of four children. He had been employed in the electrical department of Scranton Coal Co., and later in the same department of the Glen Alden Coal Co.
William died on June 1, 1952 while visiting the home of his daughter in Binghamton, NY. He was buried in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
