Marion L. Cunningham

SFC Marion Leonard Cunningham, of Eunice has gone to be with his loving wife Dorothy of 57 years. Leonard passed away on June 18, 2020 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. Leonard was born in Savannah, Missouri on Sept. 20, 1932 to William J. Cunningham and Wilma May (Kauffman) Spann.

Aside from his family, Leonard's greatest devotion was to the military. In 1952 and 1953 he fought in Korea. In 1955 he joined the Texas National Guard at Forth Worth and in May of 1967 he asked again to be activated. His Vietnam tours saw him stationed with C Troop, 1st Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry, 1st Infantry, Division nicknamed the Big Red One.
Growing up Leonard always knew his calling was to be in the service. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as family will attest. Leonard gladly volunteered all his tours with pride. Its been told that Leonard even lied about his age just so he could enlist. Mr. Cunningham was a man that stood up strong and proud for his country, his home of the red, white and blue. He was proud to be an American and was one of many that wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to and including his life if needed.”
Leonard earned several medals including the Purple Heart. He served honorably in the Army, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. His experience in the Army played a very important role in his life, SFC Cunningham went on to serve many more years as an active member of the Army until retiring in 1980.

Leonard is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Tom and Sonny and one sister Ellen.

He leaves behind one son David Cunningham and wife Tanya of Eunice; one daughter Linda Taylor and husband Teddy of Eunice; six grandchildren, Sonya Bustamante, Paula Taylor, Kasei Dean, Michael Taylor, Stormy Cunningham and Nikie Cunningham; great-grandchildren, Tristan Howell, Isabella Coe, Emma Coe, William Dean, Zoey Bustamante and Nicholas Bustamante, numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will take place at Brunson Memorial Cemetery in Eunice on June 24, 2020 at 2 pm. It has been asked instead of flowers, to please donate to your local VA Hospital.

Services have been entrusted to Calvary Funeral Home of Eunice.
