When about 9 years of age his father and mother moved to America and settled in the town of Marion, Wayne County, N. Y, where he has resided ever since. He enlisted in the U. S. Newton, Jan. 20th, 1853, Rev. Amasa Stanton of Marion officiating. Four children were born to them, Ella; now Mrs. Delbert Howell, Newton J., Georgia, and Josie, all of whom like their father are excellent musicians. His first shock occurred Jan. 21st, 1882. The last one which resulted in death took place April 25th 1883. He died April 28th 1883.

Mr. Burrud was an honored and respected citizen. For a number of years he led the choir in the Baptist church. He was a prominent member of Marion Cornet Band, being its President until poor Health compelled him to resign. He was a good husband, a kind father, a true friend. The ties which so long held him to earth-life are not broken by this event. Death only relieved of the perishable, and freed him from pain and suffering. His loss physically, is deeply felt, but his influence and presence can still be felt.

THE OBSEQUIES

of Capt. John B. BurFud, were held at the Baptist church in this place Tuesday May 1. A large audience assembled to witness the rites and sympathize with the bereaved. Marion Cornet Band expressed their regard by appearing in uni- form. The Band led the procession followed, by a company of the Grand Army Republic.

AT THE CHURCH

The large, spacious, Baptist church was filled to its full capacity. Rev. Foster of Sodus read impressively the ritual of the G. A. R. Prayer was offered by Rev, Rogers of Sodus. Sermon by Rev. FURTHER NOTED

A number of relatives and friends from abroad were present, and added sympathy for the bereaved. Rev. Hammon was detained from participating in the services, as re- quested, by illness. The choir, at the church acquitted themselves with much credit. The selections were appropriate, and the execution fine. All the arrangements were complete, the services impressive and of a high order. The few boys remaining who enlisted at the same time with Mr. Burrud, and were with him in services, manifested deep grief. One empty sleeve was noticed as a reminder of scenes that tried men's souls. CAPT. BURRUD was promoted, to the office of Colonel and was often commended for his sagacity and bravery.

The protecting arm of the Worthy son, N. J. Burrud, shielding his mother and companion of the deceased, manifested a grandeur, and spots a volume of commendation.

B. E Curtis, J. W. Copping, H.A. Ganze, J. Luce, W. Hathaway and C. C. Potter are the remaining honored few who enlisted at the same time Mr. Burrud did. It was most befitting that these men should be bearers to the grave of the last remains of Lieu Colonel John B Burrud.
