The Monroe Watchman gives the following account of the death of one of Summers Counties well-known citizens:
The sudden death of John W Coiner of Pence Springs which took place at the Central Hotel in Union the home of his son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. A J Campbell about 6 o'clock last Tuesday morning April 8 has been a terrible shock and sorrow to his friends. Hoping for an opportunity to meet some of his old Confederate comrades of Monroe during the Circuit courts session here this week, Mr. Coiner came to Union Monday evening. He had not been quite well during the winter but said he was feeling better and retired apparently in his usual heath occupying a room with his grandson, Frank Coiner. On Tuesday morning he was partially dressed when he was stricken with heart disease and fell. Mr. Campbell heard the unusual noise followed by a cry from Frank, and hastened to the room. But Mr. Coiner was already beyond human help and died before the least succor could be afforded him. His age was 73 years. Thus passed away a good man upright and useful, true to his sense of duty and esteemed by all who knew him. He was an affectionate and faithful husband and father an obliging neighbor, ever keeping the law of kindness.
In the War between the States he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served with honor in Chapman's Battery until the end of hostilities. His leave taking of life makes another gap in that "thin gray line" of gallant veterans. Mr. Coiner is survived by his wife, who before marriage was a Miss Coiner; three daughters - Mrs. John A Campbell of Union, Mrs. James Altare, whose home is near Riverview Church, and Mrs. Slater of St Albans; and three sons - Messrs B E of Williamsburg, Greenbrier county; Wm of St Albans and Frank Coiner of Pence Springs at home with his parents. On yesterday the body of the deceased was taken to Riverview Church near Lowell and there laid to repose the Rev J W Holt conducting the funeral services.
