Olean Times-Herald on January 26, 1939:

Dr. Morris was a native of McKean County, Pennsylvania, and was the son of the late Rev. S. Dexter and Elizabeth Knapp Morris, the former being a pioneer minister of the Baptist Church. He was born November 23, 1856, at Bullis Mills, Pa.

In his youth the late doctor pursued an academic course at Friendship Academy. His professional training was acquired at the University of Buffalo, from which he received an MD with the class of 1879.

During the summer sessions of 1885 and 1887, he attended the New York Post Graduate College and in 1900 went to London, England, for special study of general surgery in the West London Hospital. Again in 1914, Dr. Morris went abroad and studied surgery in London and in France. He made his third trip across in 1924.

For the first seven years following his graduation the doctor engaged in general practice at Eldred, Pa., and in 1886, came to Olean, which city had since remained the scene of his professional activity and where had been accorded a gratifying practice as physician and surgeon, his skill being widely recognized.

He was a member of the Olean General Hospital staff and for a number of years was surgeon for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.

Dr. Morris during his residence here had, at various times, served as president of the board of education; president of the YMCA; patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Electa Chapter, No. 84, and for twenty-five years was the superintendent of the First Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday School. He was also affiliated with Olean Lodge, No. 471, I.O.O.F.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the late doctor held the distinction of being one of the first Western New York surgeons to be bestowed this honor.
He was a member of the Cattaraugus County Medical Society; New York State Medical Society, as well as the American Medical Association. He was also a thirty-second degree Mason and was affiliated with Olean Chapter, No. 252, Free and Accepted Masons.

Dr. Morris was united in marriage to the late Mrs. Sarah F. Gillingham Morris of this city. He is survived by one son, Charles Dexter Morris, New York; two daughters, Mrs. Gerald Holmes of Budapest, Hungary, who has been in Olean for several months, and Mrs. Clarence Jarves, Utica, New York; and four grandchildren: Richard M. Morris, New York; Miss Mary Louise Morris, this city; Richard and Peter Holmes, Budapest, Hungary. Another son, Dr. R. B. Morris died in 1933. His widow, Mrs. R. B. Morris has since made her home with Dr. J. E. K. Morris.
