THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO VISITS MY UNCLE. YOUR KINDNESS IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
**********
U.S. War Vet., WW2. Stuart was a fireman on the oil tanker, Neosho. His ship was anchored in what is known as Battleship Row in Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Neosho was able to maneuver its way out of the harbor and escape.

Later, during the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Neosho was mistaken for a battleship and bombed by the Japanese planes. Some sailors were rescued. My uncle went down with the ship.

My mother told me that my Grandma Battenfield's hair turned gray overnight. Stuart was their oldest child and only son. I also heard that he believed in what he was doing, that is: fighting for our country and freedom.

The day I joined Find a Grave was the day that I found his memorial on the site. I don't think any of us knew there was a memorial to him in the Philippines. His name has been included on my grandparents' headstone in Lansing, MI. They had no other way to honor him. Name on cenotaph in cemetery.

Many thanks to my friend, Steve Edquist, who has since passed on for sponsoring this memorial. Thanks also to him for taking the photo of my dad's headstone with the flag beside it. RIP Steve.

The link to the memorial below has much more in depth information on what happened to him.
