Leopold, Fürst von Hohenzollern, was the eldest son of Karl Anton, Fürst von Hohenzollern, and his wife, Prinzessin Josephine von Baden. He was the elder brother of Carol I, King of Romania. He was offered the throne of Spain following the Spanish Revolution of 1868 that deposed Queen Isabella II and precipitated the Franco-Prussian War.

He was married in Lisbon on September 12, 1861 to Infanta Antónia of Portugal, the daughter of Queen Maria II of Portugal and King Ferdinand II of Portugal, born a Prince of the Koháry branch of the Saxe-Coburg family. They had three children:

1. Prince Wilhelm of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1864–1927)
2. Ferdinand (1865–1927), who reigned as King of Romania
3. Karl Anton (1868–1919)
