Donald Dean Swim, 94, of Greenup, IL passed away at 2:18 AM Friday, July 3, 2020 at Cumberland Rehab and Health Care Center in Greenup, IL.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Monday, July 6, 2020 at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, IL. Visitation was from 10:00 AM until funeral time. Burial with military rites conducted by the Cumberland County Veterans was in the Greenup Cemetery. The family requested face covering and respecting social distances.
Dean was born November 27, 1925 in rural Greenup, IL the son of Harold Edwin and Iva Marie (Ward) Swim. He married Alice Marie Hattrup on April 24, 1948 and she preceded him in 1990. He is survived by his sons, Alan Swim of Fort Wayne, IN and Gary (Cindy) Swim of Charleston, IL; daughters, Gail Nelson and Mary Dodson of Greenup, IL; six grandchildren, Heather (Bill) Decker, Sara (Marcus) Millsap, Megan Nelson, Daniel (Anna) Nelson, Joshua Dodson, and Jennifer Dodson (Brian Akers); and great grandchildren Heather Renee-Faye, Tommy Raylee-Curtis and William Blayton-Truman Decker, Avery and Hayden Millsap, Sloane Nelson, and Ian J Dodson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers, an infant sister, and brothers Theo and Gene Swim.
Dean retired from Blaw-Knox in Mattoon, IL. He was a U.S. Marine from 1944-1946, serving in the south Pacific, a life member of the Greenup VFW Post #4598 and the Greenup American Legion. He lived for Cardinals baseball.
