To the great grief of his family and friends, Mr. William Gill, one of the most highly respected citizens of Glasgow, died very suddenly and unexpectedly last Sunday night [October 21, 1923]. He had been in his usual good health until the moment of his death, which came as a shock to the entire community.

Mr. Gill was born March 4, 1859 [the son of James O. and Catherine (Rummell) Gill]. He was taken to raise, when he was a small child [after the death of his mother on September 25, 1862] by Squire and Jane Ridgeway of Round Prairie Township. There he found one of the best of homes, and proved himself to be a helper indeed to those who were so kind to him.

To mourn his going he leaves his wife, Mrs. Ellen Hoskins Gill, and six children: Nira Gill of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. George Hoover of Rome; William Gill, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Osie Calhoun of Winfield; Elmer Gill of Salem; and Mrs. Tom Dorothy of Stockport. Three children preceded him in death, Squire, Elizabeth, and Alice. He was a faithful and estimable man who had the regard of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed in Glasgow and community.

Funeral services conducted by Frank E. Weston, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant, were held in the Methodist Church in Glasgow on Tuesday afternoon [May 23] at one o’clock. Interment was in the Glasgow burying ground.
