"Mrs. Barbara Ann Metcalf, wife of Wm. Henry Metcalf, died at her home near Price's store, Chariton county, Missouri, January 31, 1886, after a brief illness.

She was born November 23, 1844, in Meigs county, Ohio. She was the daughter of Thomas and Rachel Gregory and step-daughter of Jackson Walburn, near Salisbury. She was the mother of ten children, eight of whom and her husband mourn her loss. She was a patient and devoted wife for twenty-two years. For thirty years she was a consistent member of the Missionary Baptist Church, being converted in childhood. She joined the Methodist Church with her husband and two daughters who were recently converted at Asbury Chapel. She died as she lived -- well! The expression from one of her old neighbors on the way to her funeral spoke a volume. He said, 'She was a good woman. I knew her well.' Her funeral was preached at the residence, and her remains were laid to rest beside two of her children in the family graveyard of Mr. Powhatan Agee. 'Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.'"
