Mary was the oldest child of James and Ursula (Sweeney) Gunn. She and her husband moved from Dickson County, Tennessee, to Morgan County, Illinois before 1830, along with her parents and many other relatives.

Three of Mary's and William's children were born in Tennessee before the move to Illinois: James B., husband of Martha J. Austin, and after she died he married Clarinda Hankins; Benjamin P., who first married Ann Gunn, and after her death her sister Alamarinda Gunn; and William A. Bruce. The only record found for this child is that he was born 28 February 1828 in Tennessee. He isn't with his family in the 1850 Census.

In Illinois, three more children were born to them: John and George B., who each died as teenagers; and Francis H., husband of Sarah L. Ash.

William Bruce died by 1843, but his grave hasn't been found. He is probably buried in Gunn Cemetery in Morgan County, which was founded by Mary's father James Gunn. Mary's parents and many other relatives are buried there, and several tombstones are known to be missing.

Mary was remarried to George S. McAlister 13 August 1843 in Morgan County. They had one son, Robert Carter, who married Mary E. Manning.

Before 1850, Mary was again a widow, although George McAlister's grave hasn't been found, either. Mary didn't remarry. She lived with her elderly parents until they died, then moved to Springfield with two of her sons in 1867. She spent the end of her life living in the home of her son, Francis H. Bruce.
