s/o Carl (aka Charles) Gums Sr. & Wilhelmine Luetke. He married Anna Sophie Ohlerking on Jan 9, 1891 in Henderson, MN and had seven children.

His obituary states, "Louis Rudolph Gums, beloved husband and father, passed away at his home in Peace Township Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 11 days (sic). The deceased first became ill the latter part of August, when his strength began to fail, but he maintained firm will power until the end. About two hours before his death he joined in prayer with the Reverend Carl J. Gundermann at his bedside. Louis R. Gums was born May 31, 1857, in the province of Posen, Germany, where his father, the late Carl Gums Sr., managed a stock ranch. His two brothers, namely Fred and Carl Jr., first came to America, and later were joined by the father and Louis, who was but 17 years old. The mother passed away when Louis was but a child. The family first settled at Henderson, Minn., where Louis was united in marriage to Miss Anna Sophia Ohlerking. Later he moved to Gibbon, Stewart, and Hector, Minn., residing at Hector over 20 years. About 24 years ago he moved to Kanabec County, where he resided until the time of his death. To Mr. and Mrs. Gums were born seven children, four sons and three daughters, one daughter, Anna Louise, preceding her father in death, having passed away in infancy. His wife, four sons, two daughters, two grandsons and numerous other relatives, and a great host of friends and neighbors deeply mourn the loss of this beloved husband and father. Funeral services were held from the Erickson Chapel Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 pm., Rev. Carl J. Gunderman of Mora, assisted by Rev. Sieving of Ogilvie, officiating. Messrs. Carl Hermanson, Otto Lien, Olaus Ostenson, Victor Anderson, James Nelson and Frank Carlson were pall-bearers. The remains were laid to rest at the Oakwood cemetery here. A most beautiful solo was sung at the funeral by Mrs. Carl J. Gundermann. Beautiful flowers were contributed by the neighbors."
