Laverna Markgraf and her brother, Raymond Preuss, remember going to visit the Louis Gums family in about 1917, when she was about 7 years old. They went there one summer day after her dad, Otto, got his first car, a Ford with "side curtains" that were put on in case of rain. Emma Gums was about twelve then. That fall Henry worked for her dad to help harvest the corn. That was during World War I, and they all had to be vaccinated because the flu epidemic was going around. Everyone was all lined up, and she remembers Henry fainting as he saw the doctor come with the injection needle.
