Mrs. Julia A. Griggs, mother of Postmaster Griggs of this village, whose death was noted in THE JOURNAL last week, was born in Richford, Vt., in 1807, on the 17th of Nov. of that year. She was a daughter of the late Sterling Parker, one of the business men in the early days of Richford's history. Mrs. Griggs (then Miss Parker) taught school in Sutton in 1826 and was married the following year on Sept. 2, 1827 to Elijah Griggs of this town, which was at the time little better than a howling wilderness, and has resided here ever since. Besides her son, Postmaster Griggs of this village, another son Jeremy Griggs lives in Danville, Minn., and Ed. Griggs another son lives at Bag City, Mich. The son Jeremy of Minn. came here and spent the last days with his mother. Rev. J. J. Theakston preached the funeral sermon and conducted the funeral, which was held in the Advent Church. He was assisted by Rev. I. Hall of the Methodist Church. The good old lady would have been 95 years old had she lived to November 17th next, and she was previous to her death as far as we know the oldest citizen in the town of Sutton. Mrs. Griggs will be much missed by a large circle of friends. Old as she was she very much wished to live, yet signified her readiness to go if the Lord so willed.
