GEORGE JOSEPH BARRETTE, age 87 of Peshtigo, WI went to Heaven on Tuesday April, 10, 2018 surrounded by his family at Rennes Health and Rehab Center, East in Peshtigo, WI. George was born on January 10, 1931 in Marinette, WI to the late Harold and Lorena Barrette.

At age 16 George entered the National Guard and worked at the glove factory. By age 17 George was driving truck for Clairmont Transport where his father was dispatcher. At age 18 George entered the United States Marine Corps to serve on the front lines during the Korean War in Anti-Tank Company, 5th Marines and also in recoilless rifle company. George came home and rejoined the Marines for a second hitch and served on a Naval Base in Dahlgren, Virginia.

After being honorably discharged from the Military, George came back to Marinette and married Alice McVane.

He sailed the Great Lakes working on an ore carrier. He purchased the Edgewater Tavern in Menekaunee and also worked at Kargaard. From there he started his career as a professional long distance truck driver; working for many large companies. George worked for Schneider Transport for many years where he was president of the safety board. He also drove truck for Kaufman Distributing hauling Budweiser Beer where he retired from in May of 1998. George wasn’t content with retirement so he went back to work driving truck for Nelson Freight in Peshtigo for a few more years. His lifetime accomplishment was driving over 7 million miles accident free.
George also owned Mark’s Place tavern on Pierce Avenue and would later relocate it to Marinette Avenue.

It was here that he met his present wife, Cindy Johnson of Daggett, MI and they were married May 1, 1988.
They enjoyed traveling the United States and experienced all modes of travel, including dog sledding. George enjoyed walking the mall every morning followed by a coffee session with his friends. He tremendously enjoyed reading, sometimes having 3 books going at 1 time. Riding his bicycle around town was a daily routine. George loved watching action/drama movies, but most of all he loved the Green Bay Packers. He was proud of selling beer in the first Packers Stadium. He was even put at the top of the list for Packer season tickets by Vince Lombardi himself. George was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and also the Disabled Veterans of America organization.
