Medad went to California in 1949, perhaps lured there by the gold rush. He died there. Gazetteer of Caledonia and Essex Counties, VT; 1764-1887, compiled & published by Hamilton Child, May 1887, pages 189-201.
He, a native of Vermont, was enumerated as a teamster at Stockton, San Joaquin Co., California, on 7 November 1850 in the US Census.
I can not locate Medad in the 1852 California State Census. A M. Welch, native of Ireland, lived in Sacramento and San Francisco in 1852, but this is probably not our Medad.
Given his death in California his burial at Groton Village Cemetery seems unlikely. He was more likely to have been buried in California, but I have not found him in Find-A-Grave yet.
