George Ewing Massay died at home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on September 1, 2019. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 13, 1927, to George Dewey and Mary Florence Massay. His father ministered to Christian Churches in Western Pennsylvania. Immediately following high school graduation, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy in what were the closing days of World War II. He graduated from Bethany College and the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. He married Alice Crook on August 18, 1951, at Wadsworth Church of Christ, Wadsworth, Ohio. George and Alice served Christian Churches and Churches of Christ in Canada, England, Missouri, and Virginia.

He attended Kempsville Christian Church, where he was a member of the Family Circle Sunday School Class and the Prime Timers. Survivors include his wife, Alice; his son, Jim; granddaughter, Meredythe; brother-in-law, Michael Greenblatt; and six Massay first cousins.

A memorial service will be conducted at Kempsville Christian Church 5424 Parliament Drive, Virginia Beach, by Josh Childress on Saturday, September 7, at 2 p.m. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.

His ashes will be interred at a later time in the Harlem Springs Cemetery, Harlem Springs, Ohio, where members of the Massay and Guess families have been buried for generations. The cemetery is located close to his grandparents' farm. He always described the summers he spent as a child on the farm as some of the happiest times of his life. A graveside service will be conducted by George and Alice's niece, Janet Long.
