He was the son of Daniel Mather and Beersheba Southworth. He was married to Elizabeth Reed. He was a Methodist Episcopal minister and established the Mount Herman Church in his home in 1838. He was considered an eloquent preacher. He came from a long line of ministers, including the Rev. Increase Mather of New England. He was one of the early pioneers of Union Township, arriving in 1834.
