SOUTH GLENS FALLS -- George R. Olsen passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Glens Falls Hospital.

George was born July 13, 1934, in Freeport, N.Y., to Elizabeth Cavna.

He was a hardworking man, often holding two or three jobs to support his family. Despite working long hours, George could often be found playing kickball or 21-up in the middle of his backyard with his children as well as neighborhood children. After the games, he would pass out dimes so everyone could walk to the store and get a can of soda. He also made report card day very special, rewarding his children and the neighborhood children with make-your-own sundaes. He worked for many area bakeries including Freihofer’s, Entenmann’s and Drakes.

We all have great memories of him pulling up his Millbrook truck and choosing one child from the waiting crowd to pass out the treats. He also was a bus driver for CWI and Head Start and worked for many years at Burns News Agency, where he made a lot of very good friends. George was an avid boat lover. He loved the water and sitting in front of a roaring fire surrounded by family and friends. He dreamed of one day retiring to a houseboat with his wife and best friend, Marlene. His home was always a welcome place for everyone. He took great pride in being an adviser, not only to his own children and grandchildren, but to anyone in need.

George was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth; brother, Eddie; and sister, Marion.

George’s memory is treasured by the love of his life, his wife of 56 years, Marlene; his son Tom Olsen and his son Robert; daughter Lori Mershon and her children, Ryan, Erika and Blake; daughter Linda Adams, her husband, Jim, and their niece, Aubri; daughter Diane Harrington, her husband, Earl, and their children, Miranda and Ethan; the late David R. Olsen, his wife, Dawn, and their son, Joshua; daughter Susan Caputo, her husband, Tony, and their children, Marc and Danielle; great-grandsons, Jakob and Alex Mershon; sister, Grace Grawunder and her husband, Ray; and brother Donald Cavna and his wife, Bridget. Also surviving George are his lifelong best friend, Bob Northgard, his wife, Ann, and their children, Rob Northgard, Cher McCotter and Valerie Petrycki; good friends Raymond Ash, his wife, Jane, their daughter, Tammy, and granddaughter, Tiffiny; and close friend Doris O’Rourke.

“One hundred years from now it won’t matter what kind of car I drove, What kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank, nor what my clothes looked like, BUT, The world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child.”

Our Dad, our Pa, we hope you know how important you are to us. You were always a constant source of advice and knowledge. We will continue to hear your stories, your words and feel your guidance. A successful man is one who refuses to give up on his dreams, never loses his faith and relies on his determination and strong will. You led by example and have given us the tools to do that. You taught us strength and courage despite your own fears and it is that strength and courage we will rely on now to get us through. We will stand united, the family you built with your hard work, tough love and often ridiculous punishments. Through it all, and because of you, we will smile, laugh and find humor in you too! You are the best and we will carry your lessons with us until we see you again.

In honor of his lifelong friend, Bob Northgard, the family asked that donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Northeastern Chapter in Albany, NY.
