Arlyn L. Mitchell, age 90, of Marshalltown, died on the morning of Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. Family gathered for a private memorial service and he was laid to rest at Riverside cemetery with full military honors.

Arlyn was born on May 20, 1930, in Hardin County, the son of Virgil and Ruby (Mikkelson) Mitchell. He graduated from Whitten High School. Arlyn was born a little too late for the Second World War, but not the Korean War. He answered the call and found himself in the US Navy aboard the USS GURKE (DD-783), a Gearing-class destroyer. He honorably served aboard her from 1950-1953.

On January 10, 1956, he married Berniece Weuve in St. Anthony. They always called Marshalltown home. Arlyn and Berniece celebrated 56 years of marriage before she passed in 2013.

Arlyn retired after working 32 years at Lennox as a fork lift operator. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He had many indoor plants and especially enjoyed African violets. Arlyn loved to mow and was very meticulous about his lawn. He mowed the soccer complex for many years for the Marshalltown Soccer Club. He enjoyed watching basketball.

Survivors include his daughters Caleen (Mark) Wieland of Marshalltown and Deatra (Troy) Buchholz of Waverly; his son Mark Mitchell of Marshalltown; grandchildren Alicia (Logan) Boehm of Wichita, Kansas, and Daniel Wieland of Marshalltown; Brandon Mitchell (Mckenzie Anderson) of Green Mountain, Lance (Echo) Mitchell of Liscomb, and Jared (Corey) Mendelsohn of Tarzana, California; great-grandchildren Carey, Brooklyn, Cordelia, Ryan, Jasmine and Zoe; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Berniece; their infant daughter Danita; his parents Virgil and Ruby; brother Larry (Nancy) Mitchell; sister Charlene (Dale) Gibbs; daughter-in-law Teresa Hunt Mitchell; and niece Rhonda.
