(This memorial assumes that the Anne Jacobsdatter born 28 Mar 1824 and the Anne Jacobsdatter who died 9 Jul 1856, both in Fron, are the same person, of which we who have studied this are about 90 percent certain.)

Anne Jacobsdatter, the second child of Jacob Poulsen Huskelien and Ingri Torgersdatter Haugen, was born 28 Mar 1824 on Lien under Huskelien (61.56640, 9.63336) in Kvikne, Nord-Fron, Oppland (now Innlandet) County, Norway. Anne was baptized in the Kvikne Church 27 May 1824, with godparents Embjør Lien, Jacob Lien, Ole Lien, Kari Kantrud, Kirsti Syltjordet (minister’s book: page 95, line 7; sexton’s book: page 20, line 7). Anne’s father died 2 Apr 1825, five days after her first birthday. Anne is the only one of her mother’s six children who doesn’t appear in the Fron confirmation records.

On 4 Sep 1854, Anne gave birth to a son, Jacob, on Lien under Huskelien. At Jacob’s baptism, 17 Sep 1854, Anne identified his father as Hans Engebretsen Steendalen (who on 8 Sep 1854 married Anne’s half-sister Marit Olsdatter), but Hans denied the paternity. In court on 29 Dec 1854, Anne confessed that her son’s father was really her stepfather, Ole Nielsen, which he also confessed. Anne was convicted of incest and misidentifying the father of her child and sentenced to 20 days of water and bread. Ole Nielsen was convicted of incest and sentenced to imprisonment at hard labor for one year. The court sat on the farm Hundorp in Sør-Fron. The most likely place where Anne served her 20 days was the “festningen” (“the Fortress”) at Hundorp.

On 9 Jul 1856, an Anne Jacobsdatter, said to be a 72-year-old pauper, died at Holten under Suleng in Sør-Fron, Oppland (minister’s book: page 350, line 25; sexton’s book: page 191, line 13). Anne Jacobsdatter Huskelien’s next-younger half-sister, Anne Hansdatter, then lived on Holten under Suleng with her husband and their three young children. No Anne Jacobsdatter born around 1784 can be found in Fron. Neither Anne H nor her husband, Engebret Olsen, had a mother or aunt named Anne Jacobsdatter, and no Anne Jacobsdatter born around 1784 appears on the 1801 census in Fron or in the early Fron confirmation records (which exist back to 1799). Anne Jacobsdatter Huskelien, who was 32 in 1856, disappears from the records between 29 Dec 1854 and 31 Dec 1865, date of the 1865 census, when her son Jacob lives on Lillevolden in Fron with Anne’s mother and stepfather (his father and grandmother), with Anne not there. This Anne Jacobsdatter had her funeral at Sør-Fron 15 Jul 1856.

Anne’s son Jacob is called “Jacob Hansen” the three times he appears in the Fron church book (his baptism, confirmation, and out-move). Jacob emigrated to America on the Kong Carl 24 Jun 1870 with 14 relatives, but we don’t know where he settled or what name he used in America.
