[Abijah Leavenworth was born about 1758 in Ripton Parish. He was just 19 years old when he joined the Ripton Parish Militia on 1 Jan 1777. In Oct 1777 he marched to Peekskill under Capt. John Yates.
It is said that he stood in cold water during the winter of 1777 watching the British off shore and he caught a cold. He came home where he died on 9 Nov 1777. He left his father, Captain Edmund Leavenworth and his mother Abigail (Beardsley), five sisters and three brothers who also served in the American Revolution.
