Richard was a talented mechanic, master welder, and metal artist. He began his career as a pipefitter in Houston, teaching himself Calculus and Trigonometry in order to hone his welding skills. Craig & Heidt, Inc. of Houston was home to his longest place of employment, spanning more than 30 years. Charlie Craig, one of the founders of the company, and Richard remained close friends after his retirement.
His other hobbies included trotline catfishing, cooking for huge fish fry events, antique car/toy restoration and collection, smoking outstanding barbecue brisket, and as a younger man, drag car racing. He briefly held the land speed record for a drag car in Mexico.
He was an avid reader and his favorite author was Cormac McCarthy. Richard was known for his delivery of a great joke, and he always had a huge library of new ones to share.
For all of his talents and interests in life, none of those topped the love for his dogs. Richard always had one or more at all times from a large variety of mixed breeds. Richard loved his family and is survived by his sons and their wives, Allen and Marlayna, Todd and Sarah, Ryan "Scott" and Ginger; five grandchildren, Lauren, Reid, Morgan, Avery, and Jack; two great-grandchildren, Rebekah, Declan; brother and his wife, James and Jeanette, sister, Pamela; sister, Becky; ex-wife Dawn; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patsy.
