CIVIL WAR VETERAN AND
FORMER GALENA CITIZEN DIES

S. C. Butler
known to his many friends as "Daddy Butler," for many years a resident of Galena, died at 12 o'clock today at his home in Oswego, Kansas.

Mr. Butler was a veteran of the Civil War and for many years commander of Galena Frank P. Blair Post of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was greatly beloved by all his comrades and spent much of his time in recent years in aiding members of the G. A. R. and their widows, in procuring their pensions from the government. He was a genial, kindly being of an exceptionally upright, straightforward character, one who had the courage of his convictions. He was always a staunch Republican and delighted discussing politics and his experiences as a soldier.

His wife survives, also several sons and daughters, one son residing in Galena, and two at Rosedale, Kans. The body was brought to Galena late this afternoon by the P. M. Clark Undertaking Company. Funeral arrangements are yet incomplete.

Obituary S. C. Butler.
Samuel C. Butler, mention of whose death was made last week, was taken to Galena, Kansas, his former home, for burial, agreeable to his wish, where funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 22, from the Clark Undertaking Parlors, conducted by Rev. Potter of the M. E. Church, and burial was made in Soldier Row in the Galena cemetery.

Deceased was born in Tennessee, Oct. 15, 1845. In early life he moved with his parents to Williamson county, Ills., where he grew to manhood and where he was united in marriage on Dec. 30, 1868, to Miss Malona (sic) K. Dittmore. To this union seven children were born, six of whom with the widow, survive. All were present at the funeral service. They are William E. Butler of Galena, Jos. H. Butler of Berryville, Ark., Mrs. Applegate of Keystone, Okla., Mrs. J. A. Rhoden of Gross, Kansas. There were surviving also twenty grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

When the Civil war came on Mr. Butler volunteered his services to his country, serving with great credit to himself. His first enlistment was in Co. F, 113 Ills. Infantry at Springfield, but he was later transferred to Co. E, 120th Ills. Infantry. One of his war experiences was that of serving six months in Andersonville prison. While he was incarcerated there, a prisoner of war, an underground spring caused one of the walls to give way and he with others made an effort to escape. Bloodhounds downed him, however, and while he was down was shot three times by guards and left for dead. One of these shots passed through his mouth, taking out his palate and teeth. A colored slave later found him and cared for him and helped to restore him to life and to make his escape to the Union lines.

From Illinois Mr. and Mrs. Butler moved to Perry, Iowa, in 1881, and later in 1885 they moved to Berryville Ark., thence to Galena, Kansas, in 1909 and to Oswego about two years ago. He was an ardent member of the G. A. R. and for many years was the commander in Galena. The funeral service was held under their auspices.
