B.C. had a twin brother, John Hanes McMaster, who died 7 July, 1847, in Beaver, Pennsylvania, at the age of 8 months old. His first wife, Nancy Jane Gilmer, was the sister of his second wife, Mianda Gilmer Stewart. Nancy died in May of 1881, in Jefferson County, Iowa, and she is said to be buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery. B.C. had two children with Nancy: Grace Mae and John C. McMaster. John died at 7 months old. B.C. had two children with Mianda: Irena C. (who died at 4 months) and Benjamin Clayton McMaster, Jr.
