According to his newspaper obituary (attached), H. C. Adgate married Sarah Long in 1859 in New York (other sources cite 1862). Some Ancestry.com Family Trees say Henry C. Adgate next served on the Union side in the Civil War. However, this was a different Henry C. Adgate from Ohio who died in 1918. The Adgate family moved to Georgia in 1877, initially settling in Madison, Georgia. Their 1880 U. S. Census lists them as living there.
Around 1885 the Adgate family relocated to Jasper County, Georgia, where H. C. Adgate’s entrepreneurial spirit became evident. He built a large community store/drugstore, and also became the community Postmaster, Notary Public, and Justice of the Peace. Additionally, he built the Hotel Adgate, helped run the community Central Railroad train station, and established a weekly newspaper, The Adgateville Herald. In recognition of his position in the community the small town of Grassfield was renamed Adgateville.
