Ralston, a veteran of the Air Force and the Marines, was a truck driver. He and wife Janice Ardell Woehler Bennett had five children.
He died on March 18, 1974, in the community of White Oak, Raleigh County. Ralston, who was unarmed and on his mother's property, was shot and killed by man he'd known all his life. While Ralston lay dying on the ground, his mother Verna prayed with her son and heard his confession of faith in Jesus Christ. Verna was grazed by a bullet during the incident.
Verna planted flowers in the area where her son's blood was shed.
Ralston was preceded in death by an infant sister, Hazel Jeannette, and his father Fred. Ralston was buried in the New Salem Missionary Baptist Cemetery in Abraham next to his father. When his mother Verna died in 1980, she was buried near her husband and son. Hazel Jeannette is buried in the Anderson Vest Cemetery in Summers County, W.Va.
