Son of Samuel Wales Doggett (1800 - 1872) and Harriet Wotten Doggett (1804 - 1892). Married Sarah Elizabeth Nelson (1841 - 1881) on 2 July 1860 in Pawtucket, R.I. They had one child and she died as an infant in 1861.

1st Lieut Theophilus Melancthon Doggett was a lawyer in Chicago. He was killed in the service of his country at the battle of Shiloh, as lieutenant in the Fifty-seventh Illinois Volunteers. According to the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls, Lieutenant Doggett died on 9 April, 1862, three days after he was wounded during the first day of fighting.
