He was the husband of Araminta "Minnie" Dormer Brown, whom he married on December 14, 1853 in New York City, New York, and father of Mary Marshall (married Marcus Brissel), Charles B., George Royce, Emma G., Irene Arvela, Ida W., Ada A., Carrie M. and William Solomon Brown.

Obituary - John Mapes Brown died of old age yesterday in his home, 4 Linden Avenue, Flatbush, at the age of 80. For many years he was a leading dry goods merchant of Manhattan. A widow and six children survive him.
