James Albert Gibb was raised in Hilo, Hawaii. He attended Punahou Prep and graduated from Oahu College in 1911. He graduated from Stanford University in 1915 with a degree in engineering.

He was the assistant engineer with the Honolulu Plantation Co. 1915-17 and then became the Assistant Superintendent of Honolulu Iron Works.

"Bert" entered the US Army in 1918 as a 2nd Lt.
Upon promotion to 1st Lt., he was aide to Brig Gen A.P. Blocksom and later to Brig Gen J. W. Heard. He was discharged April 18, 1919.

He was the Chief Engineer Wailuku Sugar Co. in 1919 and became the assistant Manager in 1922.

Later in life Bert was an international sales representative for Caterpillar Tractor Co., out of Peoria, Illinois, a position that entailed extensive travel throughout Central and South America.

To his friends he was known as "Bert", but to his children and grandchildren he was "Pop"'
