US Attorney for the Middle District of Florida (1831 - death). Prior, was US Attorney in the Southern (1830-1831) and Western (1831) districts of Florida. Married to Elizabeth DuVal. There is some uncertainty as to who Elizabeth was. Some researchers (i.e. Denham) indicate Elizabeth was daughter of Florida Gov. William Pope DuVal. Others produced an 13-Sep-1832 newspaper clipping from the Lynchburg Virginian newspaper (p. 3, col. 4) indicating J K Campbell, Esq., of Florida, married Elizabeth P Duval who was "daughter of Philip DuVal."

Campbell was shot and killed in a duel in Mannington, Leon Co., Fla. on 28-Aug-1833 in a dispute with merchant George Hamlin. Source: Jackson Wilder Maynard Jr., "According to Their Capacities and Talents: Frontier Attorneys in Tallahassee during the Territorial Period;" Master's Thesis, Florida State University. Note that Mannington was north of Bradfordville, near Lake Iamonia.

Burial location per Church interment book. Date of burial, 29-Aug-1832 (year is incorrect).

Per Maynard's thesis:
-Arrived in Tallahassee, 1828
-Admitted to the Bar in West Florida by Act of the Territorial Council
-Admitted in to the bar April 8, 1828
-Married Elizabeth Duval
-Killed Aug. 28, 1833 in a duel with George Hamlin at Mannington (N. Leon Co.)
-Purchased lots of land and loaned money
-Had a thriving law practice
-“Nullifier and Calhoun man”
-US Attorney for Western District (1831)
-US Attorney for the Middle District (1831)
-Clerk to legislative council
-Called a “sensible and accomplished gentleman” by Judge Robert Raymond Reid (future Gov. of Fla.)
