T. Russell McGrath , 81, of 67 Freeman Parkway, president of the former First Federal Savings and Loan Association for 26 years, died yesterday in Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket.
He was the husband of Mildred V. (Brown) McGrath.
Mr. McGrath joined First Federal Savings in 1946, and became its president in 1950 when its assets totaled about $10.6 million. When he retired in 1976, the Providence-based institution's assets had grown to about $35 million.
First Federal merged in 1982 with Warwick Federal Savings and Loan Association. The merged corporation, Rhode Island Federal Savings and Loan Association, was acquired in 1984 by Old Stone Corp.
Mr. McGrath was a 1927 graduate of Providence College and received a master's degree from Notre Dame University in 1929.
Before joining First Federal, he worked for the Providence School Department, with assignments as assistant principal of both the Oliver Hazard Perry and Nathan Bishop Middle Schools.
He was a member of the Turks Head Club and a past president of the New England Savings and Loan Association.
Born in Providence, where he lived all his life, he was a son of the late James J. and Ida E. (May) McGrath.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, two sisters and two grandchildren.
